White Privilege and Affinity Spaces - with Matt Honsberger - Beyond Camp #21

Looking within needs to happen first.

Today we are talking about identity, privilege and affinity groups. This conversation might be hard. We encourage you to sit in that discomfort, to challenge yourself and to learn. We do want to let our listeners know that this conversation is shared from the perspective of three white people and that our discussions around affinity groups are aimed at other white folks. None of us are perfect, we are at different points in our learning journeys and we all have a long way to go.

We’re joined by Matt Honsberger, Go Camp Pro’s Executive Producer of Podcasting and Experiential Educator in Toronto Ontario. Matt shares his journey in exploring his white-privilege, anti-racism work and participation in affinity groups.

Please, come and sit with us as we grow together.

Tune in to this episode to hear about:

  • To Matt

    • How do you identify?

    • Where do you carry privilege?

    • Have you always been aware of this?

    • How did stepping into your privilege feel? What did it look like?

    • How have you stumbled in talking about your privilege and supporting anti-racism?

    • Where do you feel you still have space to grow?

  • More on Affinity Spaces

    • What does an affinity space mean to you?

    • Have you participated in male affinity spaces? Would you?

    • Why do you think affinity spaces are important?

  • How do we intentionally take up less space?

  • What does making space for others to speak without speaking for them look like to you?

Have you participated in an affinity space? What did you learn from it? Tell us about it in the comments!

What is Beyond Camp?

Beyond Camp is brought to you by Go Camp Pro.

Cassie Bloy and Rachel Kent are here to explore the intersection of camp and our lives. As much as people like to talk about camp and ‘the real world’ as two separate entities, camp professionals know that this simply isn’t true. Beyond Camp dives into how different aspects of our lives affect our camp experience, effectively bursting the camp bubble and welcoming all parts of our lives into the conversation.

Go Camp Pro is excited to bring you this podcast.

If you have any feedback, or would like to support the work of Go Camp Pro email our producer, Matt, at matt@gocamp.pro
