Self-Love & Body Positivity - with Alana Matteson - Beyond Camp #19

Before you can love others, you’ve got to love yourself. Your whole self!

We are thrilled to dive into the topic of self-love, body positivity and diet culture today with our guest Alana.

Alana is vulnerable and open with us as she shares how she has come to understand and love her body.

Camp is a place where we talk often about healthy relationships and what is more important than the relationship we have with our body? Come and join us as we learn more about this important topic. We do want to offer a content warning today for brief discussion of eating disorders. Please take care of yourselves friends.

Alana grew up going to summer camp, loving every minute. She has over 6 years in year-round camp leadership, including staff training, recruiting, and development, volunteer management, special event planning, program development, and user group recruiting. She currently serves as Camp Director at Camp Hochelaga in Vermont.

Tune in to this episode to hear about:

  • How do you identify? How do those identities intersect for you as a camp pro?

  • Where do you feel you carry privilege?

  • What does self-love mean to you?

  • What does body positivity mean to you? Does this differ from self-love?

  • How do we create a culture of self-love/body positivity at camp?

How do you promote self-love at camp? Tell us about it in the comments!

What is Beyond Camp?

Beyond Camp is brought to you by Go Camp Pro.

Cassie Bloy and Rachel Kent are here to explore the intersection of camp and our lives. As much as people like to talk about camp and ‘the real world’ as two separate entities, camp professionals know that this simply isn’t true. Beyond Camp dives into how different aspects of our lives affect our camp experience, effectively bursting the camp bubble and welcoming all parts of our lives into the conversation.

Go Camp Pro is excited to bring you this podcast.
